Toyota’s answer to the most affordable two-seater, rear-wheel-drive, convertible Mazda Miata MX-5 is the roadster version of the much beloved Toyota GT 86.
Speaking with German car magazine Autobild, the 86’s chief engineer, Tetsuya Tada said that the company is working on the development of an open top model. “The GT 86 was designed from the outset to be built as a convertible,” Tada told the publication.
The spokesman did not reveal any detail if the changes will follow for Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S, both of which are sister models of the GT-86. Powering the current hardtop variant of Toyota is a 2.0-litre Subaru-sourced inline-four engine, which is favorite choice of modifiers in custom tuners. Moreover, it is more powerful than the 167 hp Mazda engine, churning up to 197 hp at 7,000 rpm and developing a torque of 204 Nm.
Mazda offers one of the most affordable two-seater convertible. However, it is not as sporty and aggressive as the Toyota when it comes to looks. So its an opportunity for fans of drop-top, who otherwise could only dream of owning a roadster with the price tag of a small car.
