The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety revealed that Acura ILX, 2013 Ford Escape, Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ grabbed the institute’s ranks among top safety pick accolade. The Ford was redesigned in its 2013 model whereas all the other three are new 2013 models.
In order to be named as the Top Safety Pick, a vehicle needs to achieve a top score in all the tests conducted by the organization. These tests include front, side and rear crash tests as well as a rollover test. IIHS has recently also introduced a new front impact test which is designed to evaluate a vehicle’s performance in keeping its passenger safe in case of an accident. However, the new test is not a part of the criteria for Top Safety Pick. However, IIHS said that most of the automakers passed the new test as engine absorbs much of the impact.
IIHS also said that the 2013 Ford Escape has improved over the previous version, which scored manageable ratings in most of the tests. In order to get good in the roof test the vehicle’s roof must be able to support four times the weight of the vehicle.
Federal Government’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration performed different crash tests and evaluated 2013 Ford Escape. The Escape grabbed 4 out of 5 stars in the front crash test and rollover tests. It also earned 5 stars in the side impact test bringing it at an overall rating to 4 stars.
