The Hyundai Veloster has always been popular amongst the consumers for its interior features and its unique styling, but the car failed to deliver on the power front, and hence its performance on the roads was best termed to be lacklustre. However, there is some good news for lovers of this vehicle, the CEO of Hyundai, Mr. John Krafcik, has announced that a new turbocharged Hyundai Veloster is in the pipelines. This fact was officially confirmed by Krafick through the company’s Twitter page, where he tweeted that the Hyundai Veloster Turbo was indeed coming and would be showcased at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show.
The Company however strongly maintains the stand that the decision to introduce a new turbocharged Hyundai Veloster was not introduced by the complaints going around the automotive industry that the original Veloster was underpowered. Since another turbo model, the Hyundai Genesis Coupe was also in the pipelines, it was just a question of identifying whether the Company lineup had room enough to accommodate two turbocharged vehicles, and also to make sure that they had a segmental differentiation. Miles C Johnson, the product spokesperson for Hyundai Motor America, has indeed confirmed that the Company has indeed lined up product differentiation segment wise, while arriving at the decision of bringing in two turbocharged coupes into the market. According to him, Hyundai will offer a front-wheel drive turbocharged coupe in the Veloster and a rear wheel drive turbocharged coupe in the Genesis.
Initial details about the Hyundai Veloster Turbo is just about trickling in, but it has been reported in the ‘Autoblog’ that this vehicle will get its power from Hyundai’s new 1.6 litre inline four-cylinder engine. As per ‘Autoblog’, previously anounced specifications indicate that the engine would be of 204 hp, which would be an addition of 66 hp to the standard Hyundai Veloster. One assumes that along with the imcrease in power, the model will also get some more upgrades to it; hence the turbocharged Hyundai Veloster would indeed be expected to be received with a lot of enthusiasm.
Hyundai Motor America Product has yet to finalize any details as regards to the pricing of the product. However, there are speculations in the market that the Hyundai Veloster Turbo may cost around $2000 more than the base model. Though the officials in the Company are tightlipped as of now on the pricing of the vehicle, it is speculated that the starting price of the car will hover around the $20,000 mark. This inference is drawn from the fact that the base model of the Veloster will be fitted with a 138HP 1.6 litre four-cylinder engine. It will also have a six-speed manual transmission. Starting price of the Veloster is supposed to be $18,060; which would also include $760 destination charge.
So, all the American car lovers, who had been bowled over by the unique styling and the interior features of the Hyundai Veloster but backed out from making a purchase because of sceptism on the vehicle’s performance, you can now rejoice as the turbocharged version of the Veloster comes to you at the Detroit Auto Show!
