Ford’s tough and rugged F-150 SVT Raptor has been a hot favorite with off-roaders since its launch way back in 2009. Since then small number of upgrades were being carried out by Ford to keep this vehicle updated and keep people’s interest in it, intact. These continuous upgrade efforts on part of Ford have now given birth to the 2012 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor which again demonstrates Ford’s capability to produce world-class off-road vehicles. With the 2012 F-150 SVT Raptor, Ford has definitely managed to raise the bar as far as off-road vehicles are concerned.
Here are few things that the 2012 F-150 SVT possesses.
1. Off-road capability:
Off-road capability of F-150 SVT is simply superb. It can negotiate with all sorts of terrain, irrespective of how difficult the terrain is. The secret to this excellent off-road capability of the F-150 SVT primarily lies in its tracks, which is seven inches wider than the tracks of a standard F-150. This extra wide track provides the vehicle with extra stability, which is must if a vehicle has to successfully negotiate rough terrain. The 2012 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor comes with 13.5 inches of suspension travel in the rear and 11.2 inches in the front. The front suspension works through the FOX internal triple bypass shocks which are capable of adjusting their stiffness in real-time in order to prevent the truck’s belly from hitting the ground. The underside of the Raptor also has a full complement of under-armor skid plates as well as hill descent control feature which controls the vehicles movement when it is sliding downward in a slope.
2. Unique Off-road mode:
Another thing that adds to the excellent off-roading capability of the Raptor is its unique “off-road mode” which, in a way, decides how the vehicle will behave on rough off-road terrain. When turned on, the off-road mode controls the behavior of the vehicle’s engine and transmission and gives the vehicle that excellent capability to glide over all sorts of surfaces. Off-road mode holds the each gear as long as possible before up-shifting and in a way, takes the edge off of the vehicle’s throttle to ensure smooth power supply as not to upset the balance of the truck on rough grounds.
3. The Powertrain:
A vehicle with this kind of off-roading capability must have the best possible engine under its hood and the 2012 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor has exactly that. It has a single 6.5L, eight-cylinder engine with a mind boggling 411 HP and 434 lb-ft of torque. This kind of an output makes the Raptor’s engine probably the most powerful engine in use in a dedicated off-road vehicle.
4. SelectShift Automatic Transmission:
The Ford F-150 Raptor comes equipped with a six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission. The transmission also has a manual mode which allows the driver to select the gear he wants to use and also hold that gear for as long as he wants without the risk of an upshift. It is also possible to force a downshift by selecting lower gears as soon as the engine drops to the point where limiter will not intervene.
5. Look and style:
Although the Raptor is built to be a tough and rugged off-roader, it has a certain sense of style and finesse about it. From the outside the Raptor dos look like a mammoth off-road truck. But if you take a look on the inside, you’ll see nothing that indicates it is an off-roader. On the inside, the Raptor is all style and class. Luxury seems to be the buzzword of Raptor’s interior design. The light blue theme and nice cooled leather seats provide the passenger with the best off-road experience with the highest level of comfort. It also has a special LCD vehicle information screen where the driver can get all the necessary info.
