Until now only crudely built mules have been spotted but now for the first time completed prototype of the 2014 Jeep Liberty have now been spied testing.
It not quite clear if the vehicle will be retaining the Liberty name or it may be tagged with the Cherokee name tag. The earlier spotted mules were disguised under the body of Giulietta to hide their mechanicals. The CUSW platform is quite important for the Fiat and Chrysler and will also be featured behind Alfa Romeo Giulia and Chrysler 200 sedan.
The use of new platform will mean that Liberty will be more of crossover although it will still offer All-wheel drive. The positioning will allow it to compete with the best sellers in the crossover segment such as Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.
While the hardcore Jeep fans may not like the crossover status of the upcoming model but the good thing is that it will be likely to get some new technology. Chrysler is working on the downsized version of its much appreciated 3.6 litrePentastar V6 engine and this new engine is expected to debut with the Liberty.
There also chances that the new engine will be mated with a nine speed automatic gearbox that will be supplied by Germany’s ZF. With the increased gear ratio, the downsized version of the 3.6 V6 will be able to perform comparable to the performance of 3.6 litre unit.
The production of the next gen 2014 Jeep Liberty will take place at the Chrysler’s Toledo North plant in Ohio. The plant has recently undergone a makeover to for the crossover. The vehicle is expected to be priced at $23,395.
